Address: Taigh Lamraig, Acairsied Mohr, Isle of Eriskay, Outer Hebrides

Coordinates: 57.065602, -7.296880

You can travel here by ferry from the mainland or by air from Glasgow to Benbecula - see below for more detail

By Ferry:

Caledonian MacBrayne sail either from Mallaig or from Uig on Skye.

Mallaig is approximately 3 hrs drive from Glasgow and the crossing is 4 hrs. Its ferry docks at Lochboisdale (South Uist), 30 mins drive north of Eriskay.  Uig’s sailing is approximately 2 hrs and the ferry docks at Lochmaddy (North Uist), aprox 90 mins north of Eriskay.

You will need to book your ferry well in advance during the summer months and allow time to top up with petrol on the mainland (it’s invariably cheaper than on the islands). We favour the Mallaig option – longer on the ferry, but a shorter drive if coming from the south.

NB: just a warning that very sadly, these ‘lifeline services’ have become worryingly unreliable due to an ageing ferry fleet. Advance booking – and continency planning – is advised.

Flying:

There are two Loganair choices, both from Glasgow, both twice daily.

Option 1 is to Benbecula, in a 30 seater plane.  From Benbecula you’d need to rent a car or taxi (approx. £50).  Drive time from the airport on Benbecula to Eriskay is about an hour.

Option 2 is to Barra, times subject to tides, in a 14-seater plane.   The only scheduled flight in Europe where the runway is a stunning, white sandy beach; it is the more romantic option!  From the airport you can either book a cab (in advance), catch a mini-bus (sometimes free if you’re lucky) or walk (c2.5 miles / 40 mins) to the Sound of Barra ferry pier at Àird Mhòr for the 40-minute crossing to Eriskay.  Check the Caledonian MacBrayne website in advance.  No need to book for foot passengers.  The drive to the house is about 5 minutes from the ferry.
